| Do
your web site pictures enhance or detract from your
message?
Recently
I met with a new client who showed me some web sites
that she really liked. Although the graphics were attractive,
there was almost no copy on the home page and little
on other pages. I could barely tell what the site was
about and who it was for. Had we not been evaluating
sites she liked for the project we were working on,
I would have clicked off these web sites in a heartbeat.
Here are some good rules that will help you to achieve
the right mix of images and copy:
- Select
images that relate to your message. A pretty flower
on a web site about health does not convey the purpose
of the site. But pictures of vibrant, happy, healthy
looking people in different age groups against a soothing
background are excellent choices.
- Avoid overpowering your site with images. Images
can not be read by search engines and do nothing to
help your ranking for keywords. Images can also slow
the load time of your pages. Optimize images for the
web to assure quality while keeping the file size
to a minimum. Ideally the total file size of a page
should not exceed 50-80 kb.
- Edit
your photos in a professional program like photoshop.
Edit by cropping, enhancing the clarity and adjusting
colors as necessary. Quality pictures will help your
sales, particularly on an eCommerce site or on a web
site with an image gallery.
- Select
colors that are appropriate for your industry. Colors
that appeal to a corporate market are different than
colors attracting a health market. Some colors are
soothing while others stimulate or even offend. Do
some research on colors or consult with a professional
for guidance on color selection.
- Include
a headline that tells people right away what your
site is about and who it is for. Make your headline
rich in benefits and keywords. Always remember that
people want to know what's in it for them.
- Include sub-headlines
that organize your content and make it easier for
the reader to understand your message. Use a background
image or color to make these sub-headings stand out.
- Include keyword rich
copy that relates to your message and helps you to
be found in search engines.
These simple rules will
help you to create more effective web pages that are
likely to produce the results you are seeking.
